Openness agreement, custom orders, ANZLAA

Newsletter snapshot

In this edition, we share how your feedback is shaping our services, from custom orders through our online portal to our decision to retain the current rat feed. We also bring you updates on our customer visits, commitment to greater openness, local genotyping service and plans for ANZLAA 2026.

A commitment to greater openness

unnamed (1)

Ozgene and Ozgene ARC are proud to become signatories to the Australian Openness Agreement on Animal Research and Teaching, a voluntary national initiative developed by the Australian and New Zealand Council for the Care of Animals in Research and Teaching (ANZCCART).

Signing the agreement reflects our commitment to responsible science, animal welfare and open communication about why animals are used in research, the benefits they help deliver, and the ethical oversight that governs their use. It also reinforces our ongoing efforts to apply the principles of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement through rigorous review, responsible colony management and innovations such as goGermline™.

Thank you to ANZCCART for driving this important initiative.

Custom orders now available online

Ordering a custom cohort is now easier. Developed in response to recent customer feedback, this new feature allows you to request custom breeding for any strain directly through our online ordering portal.

The process is similar to placing a standard order. Simply enter your requirements and our team will review your request, confirm the details or suggest changes where needed.

Your request will be saved to your account, and once confirmed, the order will appear alongside your standard orders, giving you a complete view of all your Ozgene ARC orders in one place.

Connecting with our customers

Our team recently connected with researchers and animal facility staff in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney to share updates and learn how we can better support their work. Brisbane is next on our itinerary, with a visit planned next week.

We discussed animal availability, ordering and communication, timed mating, genotyping, colony management, imports, and custom mouse models. It was encouraging to hear positive feedback about the quality of our animals, our customer service and the value of meeting face-to-face.

We returned with plenty of practical ideas and follow-up actions. One has already been implemented: customers can now request custom breeding through our online portal, as introduced in this newsletter.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet with Maarit, Jacqui and Neha and share their feedback. We look forward to visiting our customers in Brisbane next week.

Rat feed update

Earlier this year, we asked for your feedback as we considered changing our rat feed to further support animal health and welfare and better align body weights with published reference data.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experience and insights. Based on your feedback, we have decided to continue using the current feed. This is the same feed previously used by the former Animal Resources Centre and has remained unchanged since Ozgene ARC assumed its services.

Your input has helped us make an informed decision that supports continuity for researchers and their studies.

Fast, local mouse genotyping

Our Australian genotyping service provides a convenient, locally delivered solution for mouse genotyping projects of any size.

All assays are performed using qPCR, with support for one or multiple assays per sample. Send tail snips, ear punches, tissue samples or prepared DNA in a 96-well plate, and receive tailored electronic reporting.

The service includes assay design and validation, DNA extraction, qPCR genotyping, analysis and reporting. Standard results are available in 72 hours from sample receipt, but larger cohorts and projects involving multiple assays may require additional time.

We are looking forward to exhibiting at the ANZLAA 2026 Conference. Visit our booth to meet the team, discuss your service needs and explore our giveaways. We will also give a talk on Friday share our journey to becoming Australia’s third AAALAC-accredited facility.

At the Brisvegas event, come play roulette at the sponsored Ozgene ARC table, where the mouse always wins!
